Pasadena Living Filter

 

This project used plants and fungi to filter water used for the weekly cleaning of a three story parking garage. Instead of dumping the water used to clean the garage in the storm drain as usual, I had the maintenance crew put the water in a tank on the roof which slowly released the water into a series of tubes. The tubes fed the water through plants and oyster mushrooms which filtered the water and broke down pollutants picked up from the parking garage.

The cleaned water was then used to water plants in the courtyard below.
